So I’ve been sat here yesterday fucking about with the notebook setup and getting rid of all the crap that I didn’t need on it as well as sorting the ipod for playing pleasure hehe. I have a cute wee calendar program installed on the notebook and am about halfway through setting that up. Apart from that I’ve done fuck all elese but sit here and do ‘homework’ for uni. Lots of pieces of paper and bits of black card making composition layouts and then disecting them and ‘explaining’ what I’ve done. Joyful nawt. I have 36 of them to do, right now I think I have about 14 lol. So yeahs … I have shit to do. I also have another written piece I have to get done as well.
I haven’t even had time to have a wank this week, no deviant kinky escapades and no bruises to poke I know a box of fun huh?
I’m in week one of uni and already have two assignments to get done so tonight will be spent doing one of them and an 8am lecture in the morning.
Am I tired much? Yes.
Brain fart? Yes.
A whole week of full on new stuff and braindrain. I did learn a new technique for creating concepts today (freekin handy for work as well!) and I’m thinking this might be useful with writing too. I’m already learning new things and loving it.
We did a brainstorming exercise after the lecture today and my god what an amazing wee tool. Generally I have always done the mind map thing, sat down with pen and paper and written down ideas for a logo concept etc. This new way pulls random creativity and takes you places you would just simply not go with simple mind mapping.
I was given the word FRUIT … used the technique and ended up choosing one of the obscure words I ended up with … SNORT … we then did the standard mind mapping technique and I ended up with a lovely generic word .. FRESH. The deal was then to ‘force fit’ or combine SNORT & FRESH and come up with a concept for a fruit stand. Strange things come from force fitting, the first idea was fruit flavoured snorting sticks. Lol was total fun and I ended up with a mascot “Snort” a piggy type character with an organic ‘fresh’ theme stand and the packaging had ‘scratch and sniff’ labels. We did loads of examples and brainstorming and then got given an assignment which is for a logo design for another topic.
Tomorrow’s lecture involves art history. 2 hours worth. Then another two hours of studio time working with black and white paper and cutting out shapes and playing with ‘space’ and more notes. I’m gonna need strong coffee. Fridays I get off, well no classes anyways.
So the blog may be a little erractic at times depending on what’s going on and what work I need to get done but I knew this was coming.
So yeahs time to go be a mummy then get stuck into homework later.
I still need to get a notebook and a freekin ipod sorted. I neeeeeeed music.
27 degree heat and a large bottle of water had me start my afternoon of standing outside of the town hall watching all the new students including myself, waiting to start our new journeys.
It was pure madness, but great fun finding my little group of first year graphic design students, having chats and asking all kinds of questions. Then we had a welcoming session and after that it was off to our lecture hall in our block to meet the program leaders. Most of what was said was really nothing new to me as far as the field of graphic design, the need to adhere to deadlines and asking questions.
One thing that had me sat there feeling very proud of myself was something the tutor made very clear…out of 500 applicants that applied for this degree, the 130 of us sat in that lecture room were the cream of the pile.
Wow.
I was a little surprised. For every single one of us in that room meant that four other people per person hadn’t got in. Handpicked as the most promising and most talented he said. The university I have chosen is the best NZ has to offer as far as a Graphic Design course and has a reputation for churning out some of NZ’s top designers so I am very proud to be chosen. It did bring home the fact that my age and work experience has already given me a huge head start. In more ways than one.So I am kinda buzzing a little over that. I feel good, like all the hard work over the years has been recognised in a way that actually means something to me.
Next Monday is the start of the full time classes 8am start. Apparently, according to one of the tutors, graphic designers like to ‘look’ cool. But we have to not worry so much about looking cool and apparently be nerdier. Hmmm I’ll have no problem with that. I can do both haha.
The whole concept of working ‘with’ a tutor as a peer on a first name basis and having someone there to teach us how to be independent in our thinking and our design approach is why I am pursuing this degree, relearning and enhancing the creative process is a huge hurdle I want to tackle and grow into. After sitting there today and literally bouncing off the energy of the tutors and the whole environment I’m more than ready. I need this. And the tutors are pretty freekin cool.
Right now I am tired, it’s been a long afternoon, the orientation started at 1pm and I got home just after 5.30.
I came home to find a couple of review items from Eden Fantasys which was a nice way to end the afternoon, some gorgeous rope and a rather fascinating bullet.
I had a quick play with a new book and some rope tonight …
What happens when you don’t have interwebz for a good week because of a phone company’s fuck up? … I go do random stuff like pulling old typewriters apart, hunting for art gear, pissing off to a gun range to have my eardrums blown out hehe. Visiting comic shops and getting all stupidly excited over figurines. Gothy ones. WANT!
Impy goes exploring a well known area and gets asked if I know who Martin Fuckin Emond is. SO I get shown …
Eh? Says Impy. Who?
Kinda weird when I go exploring in a shop here in NZ and immediately am in awe and walk out in a complete festering arty mood. I want to draw and paint. The art I see I love.
I grew up reading comics, I have a fascination for animation artists. I love tattoo art and have done so for many years, even just about became a tattooist when offered an apprenticeship a few years back. I love the old style tattoo art and the poster images that depict this style. I also love the whole ‘James Dean’ thang. So who is or should I say ‘was’ Martin Fuckin Emond. In the international world of comic art and hard rock illustration this dude was well revered. He became well known for his illustrated novel “White Trash” which pulled him into other high profile comic work including “Heavy Metal”. He has also created album covers for the band “Danzig” as well as a couple of well known Kiwi bands, Shihad and Head Like a Hole.
In late 1999 he jumped into creating streetwear for Illicit Clothing which is where I ended up yesterday, my mouth agape and grinning like a twit oogling all the AWESOME artwork.
They say Emond’s work is said to be reminiscent of rock n’ roll tattoos and classic sign art, and characterised by darkly sardonic humour. i have to agree and it resonates with what I love about art and comic style illustration. As for the dark humor, well nuff said. I love it. His little project that he was continually working on was a little guy called Switchblade. Very cool … his favourite saying “Throw up your goats!”
An amazing fucking artist who had talent. Sadly he’s not on this plane anymore which totally sucks because I’ve just discovered an artist I adore. He even was inspired by another artist whom I have a wee affinity for and have some of the dude’s artwork reproduced and floating around here in my art books and the comics.
A painter, illustrator and an NZ cartoonist.
I wish I had been able to meet him.
All I can say is just “fucking wow”. Inspiring.
So yeah thats what I’ve been up to. Galavanting about the place waiting for the phone company to get their shit together.
And on that note I’m off to immerse myself in artwork.
(3 weeks to go till uni starts. I’m frothing at the mouth to get stuck in!)
Let’s see I’ve done feck all except get my ass kicked in memory and monopoly by a six year old. My stubborn streak made me want to keep playing monopoly for a ridiculous amount of time until he caved and said he was hungry … he still kicked my ass. Tinbum. Meh.
My back has been a bitch for the last couple of days so I’ve not gone near the computer alot, instead I had an OCD urge and went through all of my paperwork and bedroom jumble and cleaned out a whole pile of stuff and re-organised a whole pile of stuff. Heh.
