Vampires myth, legends and folklore have existed worldwide for centuries. In nearly every culture and society they have appeared somewhere, around a fire, late at night, telling the stories. Originally vampires were hideous, bloodthirsty creatures, they prowled the night and preyed on those who were weak and poor. Todays image of the vampire however is very different. Bram Stoker’s Dracula was one of the pivotal tales in creating the seductive creature of the night, twisting romance into a sordid tale of horror.
Twilight however made the idea of the vampire a wee bit horrid. I’d prefer to lump that in it’s own box … ‘pathetically sparkly’.
I’ve been researching and reading about vampires for the past few weeks in regards to a uni assignment. It wasn’t something I directly decided to research but more fell into the subject of the eroticism of vampires and why and how it has evolved to where it is today. And I must say it’s rather fascinating. I’m still researching.
The vampires of the 19th century were romanticized, back when people began doing plays, especially in the earlier 19th century it was decided the vampire on stage needed a more acceptable look as to not scare away the punters. The old vampire who was grotesque and scary didn’t work with the romance aspect so they began to change the vampire. They became the sensual, dark and erotic creature that had no boundaries, took what they wanted and crossed the boundaries of humanity, religious and societal rules and restraints. The earlier sexually repressed Victorian era found the vampire was an outlet for dark desires, sensuality that had been pent up and hidden. The vampire was not only terrifying but sensual and alluring. Over time the vampire has evolved from a man in the shadows, only coming out at night to feed on his victims to the ultimate sexual being, hot and humpable.
Today’s vampire is one of the most sensationalised and eroticized monsters of our time. Immortal, beautiful, and able to indulge in desires and sexual urges. He is refined, educated, deep and mysterious, well dressed, seething with sexual intensity. Many woman love the idea of being seduced by the ultimate ’bad boy’, as some say, the epitome of dangerous sex. He may well be a monster but a new twist draws you in, empathetic to his plight. The monster he is but he is also the man fleeing from the monster within. The new vampire has a struggle of his own, a fear of being alone through being immortal, the misunderstood soul. People relate to these feelings, they become drawn into the story of this fictional yet real character. He seeks a companion to fill the void but also has to fight the dark side of himself.
Add the underlying themes in most vampire film and stories today and you have sexual exploration galore, S&M tones, homosexuality, fetish wear, the sharing of blood, polyamory, rough sex …. So question … does the vampire mirror people’s fears about sexuality? It it a form of escapism by indulging in the fantasy world of the vampire? A vampire’s love is intense, almost suffocating, overwhelming. Some say the vampire is a metaphor for addiction. The vampire’s freedom from rules and social restrictions is the nature of his sexuality. The modern vampire is still a creature of appetites, and that certainly includes sexual appetites, but the vampire’s sexual adventures are not limited to members of the opposite sex. So high is their libido and so devoid are they of proper gentlemanly and ladylike restraint, that vampires will have sex with just about anyone. The magnitude of their lusts is terrible…
‘licks lips … I’ll have one please …’
I’ll leave you with something I found very interesting and thought provoking …
“Yet, in reality, a vampire is nothing more than a person who is an empath, and can be emotionally draining. While most cultures still believe in the myth of vampires, most accept that they simply do not exist, at least, not in the literary and film sense. However, vampires are very real; most people can attest to knowing one, maybe two, individuals that are too draining to be around. They are called psychic vampires, feasting on the “pranic energy (life force)” of others (Arthen). They are the embodiment of the vampire: night dwelling, photosensitive, and draining; though, they do not drink real blood. Though it does beg the question: if vampires are real, do they sense the hero and shadow within their own being; are they at odds within their own souls, as their literary counterparts? Is it a physiological or psychological need that they fulfill when they absorb another’s energy? There may never be definitive answers to these questions, which may be why the vampiric myth continues on through generations.”
