Got steam?

I’m preoccupied. I have this wee obsession atm.

Steampunk fever I haz it.

Steampunk what the fuck is it? Well it could be described by thinking “What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner.” Steampunk’s true definition is a point of constant debate. Its roots laying in a Victorian/ Edwardian industrial aesthetic with a ‘do it yourself’ ethos. It is one of eclectic design and influence, flexible and adaptable. Perhaps this is why so many are adopting it as their own? It’s kinda an offset of cyberpunk and it has a little of a gothic theme to it too. There’s different generes I suppose …

Medieval Steampunk: Speculative fiction set during the Middle Ages.
Victorian Steampunk: A modern Science Fiction work (post-1930s) that is set in the early parts of the industrial revolution.
Western Steampunk: Science fiction set in the American Old West.
Industrial/Modern Steampunk: Science fiction taking place in the late industrial age, early modern age; i.e. World War 1, World War 2

I’ve always loved old collectible things. The Victorian era had so many wonderful things that combined with modern day things now can result in some fantastical unique stuff. Antique furniture and brass goodies. There’s something about the old stuff that just does it for me. And the clothes omg! They are just rawr!

I have a shirt I found the other day at a secondhand store and it oozes Steampunk style. I love second hand outlets, so much treasure to be found. Now I am on the hunt for cog type button and buckles. It can be an expensive and an inexpensive hobby depending on where you can source the bits from. Rogue turned up the other day with an old typewriter for me to pull apart *squees*. I am gathering things left right and center at a slow pace and getting inspired by so much stuff on the interwebz. I even found a ‘how to’ transform a nerf gun into a Steampunky gun LOL.

Where do you go and look for inspiration and just to be curious? There’s loads of places on the web that can kickstart the creative mind …

The Steampunk Home ~ a cool blog with articles on bits and pieces for the home

The Steampunk Workshop is one of my favourite sites

The GasLamp Bazaar ~ Steampunk Magazine’s Forum

Steampunk Lab ~a central repository for steampunk projects

A community for Steampunk addicts

Then there’s the clothes!

There’s so many inspiring things!

And if that isn’t enough check out the freekin awesome jewellery … want! Loads of people are using Etsy as one place to sell their handmade goods. And the best thing is a hell of a lot of this stuff is one off’sor hard to find gear.

So if you went and had a nosey you would understand why I have been slightly preoccupied of late.

So much to see and dooo.

I’m thinking some kink gear would look freekin awesome Steampunk style or a whole dungeon decked out in Steampunk fashion hehe.

Anyways it’s late and I need some shuteye, well when my brain decides to shutdown for a bit.

you don’t know how glad I am that the leather familee shares my obsession.
It was getting lonely out here!

personally I’m really into the Victorian styles with a bit of industrial thrown in as well.
now I’ll have company while I’m sitting up too late stitching away/painting/collecting/glue-gunning/taking things apart *sigh*

I first contacted Steampunk in a novel by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling: The Difference Engine. Very fun read. I since have become a bit … intrigued… by the whole idea of what the world would look like if we had the technology of today married with the craftsmanship of then.

If you ever get ten minutes to rub together you should enter Secondlife and take a look at (aside from my ever so slightly steampunk TARDIS) the wonders of Port Babbage, an entire world of Steampunk.

God, that makes me sound like such a geek. At any rate, I am available for tours…”Step right up and see the AMAZING world of sights and sounds unlike ANYTHING you’ve encountered”

@Liras Yes some of the clothing is beautiful, I love the long flowing things and the tight corsets with a bit of added quirky accessories and bizarre jewelery

@Tristan I love the idea of having a house decked out like that. I dunno it somehow gives it a character of your own. I have been on Secondlife for a nosey a long while back and now my fan on the video card is dying so it’s not letting me go near any gaming type program without scary warnings lol. When I get it fixed I shall go be nosey :D Sounds bloody intriguing.

@Lilly Oh yeahs I have a friend who wants to build the keyboard hehe and i am picking if they do that then the monitor will be next LOL Omg lol that is one game I have never got round to playing but was always curious to play. Freaky. :D
